Fitness Training

“…Maura understands that we all have unique fitness strengths, goals and limitations; and although she pushes us to strive for the next level, she does so with her unique, gentle-mannered approach. The atmosphere among the 4-5 women participating in the classes is one of positivity, unity and building each other up, and I always leave there in a better mood than when I walked in.”

I have been participating in Maura’s small group training classes for about 6 months now. Not only does Maura come up with new ways to strengthen our bodies each week, but she does so in a way that makes the 45-minute class go by in the blink of an eye. The workouts consist of very short circuits so we are always moving from one thing to the next very quickly, with the flexibility to modify exercises to suit our personal abilities. Maura understands that we all have unique fitness strengths, goals and limitations; and although she pushes us to strive for the next level, she does so with her unique, gentle-mannered approach. The atmosphere among the 4-5 women participating in the classes is one of positivity, unity and building each other up, and I always leave there in a better mood than when I walked in. I would highly recommend Maura as a personal trainer, or as an instructor for small group training.

“…There are several levels of abilities in our class but we can all do the exercises. I have never felt as good as I do now. Sometimes the next day I will have some muscle discomfort but I know it is a good discomfort. I am using muscles I didn’t even know I had. At times I am challenged with an exercise due to an accident I had several years ago that damaged my wrist. However, Maura always provides me an alternative way to work the muscles without me having to ask.”

I started taking a small group class with Maura about a year ago. I had lost some weight and it was time I added some exercise, besides walking, to my week. I was very reluctant to go to an exercise class because I never had and I did not want to embarrass myself. After much coaxing from my workout friends, I went. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! Maura is so kind and smart and knowledgeable. There are several levels of abilities in our class but we can all do the exercises. She is the best! I am a much better me because of Maura! I would and do highly recommend Maura to everyone!

“…Not only is Maura’s program a total neck-to-ankle workout, but she is very knowledgeable about nutrition and general healthy lifestyles. She is also very kind and has never made me feel uncomfortable if I wasn’t doing doing an exercise properly.”

I had a physical last year and my P.C.P. wanted me to do muscle resistance exercises. I had exercised for 29 years and told her I didn’t want to go back to the gym. She suggested I get a personal trainer but I was nervous about the cost. She told me to try to find a partner to decrease the expense. I called my yoga instructor and she recommended Maura. My instructor was interested in doing partner training also, so we met with Maura and began working out one day a week together. I felt so good afterwards. I knew one day a week wasn’t enough so we increased it to 2 days a week. Then four more ladies joined the group and the cost was very reasonable.

Not only is Maura’s program a total neck-to-ankle workout, but she is very knowledgeable about nutrition and general healthy lifestyles. She is also very kind and has never made me feel uncomfortable if I wasn’t doing doing an exercise properly. What I really appreciate is when she corrects my form if it needs to be, to prevent me from injuring myself.

I have exercised in several places, but Maura is the best instructor I ever had. I am grateful for her and will follow her anywhere.

“…I have to admit those first classes kicked my butt and I left tired every Monday and Wednesday for a couple of weeks but Maura has made each class unique and fun. She will show you and suggest modifications for your level of fitness. Maura takes time each week to change our routine and add in some fun but challenging partner exercises so it feels more like a game than a workout!”

I have been a part of a small group attending Maura’s classes twice a week for just about 8 months. I have always had a fitness routine that waxed and waned throughout the years, jazzercize, running, walking, the gym (hated the gym) yoga, home videos…so I’ve managed to stay somewhat fit into my fifties. As I crept past 55 years old, weight maintenance, muscle toning and having enough energy to get me through my day became more challenging.

I have to admit those first classes kicked my butt and I left tired every Monday and Wednesday for a couple of weeks but Maura has made each class unique and fun. She will show you and suggest modifications for your level of fitness. Maura takes time each week to change our routine and add in some fun but challenging partner exercises so it feels more like a game than a workout!

Each week my fitness level has improved, I have gotten better in my ability to do the harder version of each exercise, I am using heavier weights and tighter bands. Somewhere along the way my fatigue upon leaving has been replaced with exhilaration! I am 57 years old and although I will never wear a bikini again, I am proud of the strength of my body and how good I feel in it!

I love our small group, each week we chat and laugh (we laugh a lot)…we are having fun AND doing something great for ourselves! So grab a couple of girlfriends, sign-up for Maura’s class, commute to and from it together in the “fun car”…and go for it! You won’t regret it! Thank You Maura!!!

“…After each surgery, Maura took the time to talk with my physical therapists to understand the status of my rehab and physical condition, then create an integrated plan to rebuild my core strength and flexibility. Today, I have minimal back pain and am able to walk longer distances, climb stairs more easily, and go dancing.

Maura has been partnering with me for almost 3 years. Previously, I had not been focusing on my health for some time. Then at the age of 56 I needed two hip replacements and suffered with low back pain. After each surgery, Maura took the time to talk with my physical therapists to understand the status of my rehab and physical condition, then create an integrated plan to rebuild my core strength and flexibility. Today, I have minimal back pain and am able to walk longer distances, climb stairs more easily, and go dancing. I plan to continue working with her, making our workouts a twice-a-week routine knowing I have a physically active future ahead of me.

“…Maura is an amazing trainer. I have never once looked at the clock to see if I am done. I enjoy learning the right way to do exercises and strength training. I have seen a noticeable difference in what I am able to do.”

I have consistently run over the years to try and stay in shape. That always seemed easy to me and I could get a quick run in and then be able to start my day.

I knew I needed strength training but was reluctant to do it because that is my weak area and felt like it was more of chore that I dreaded to do. I would take a class here or there at the local gym or different places but always found myself looking at the clock or trying to see around the person in front of me to make sure I was doing the exercise correctly.

I saw Maura’s post about small group training and thought I need to do that but put it on the back burner once again. One of my good friends who always pushes me to do more asked if I wanted to go with her. I signed up along with my sister and sister in law. It is the best thing that I have done for myself.

Maura is an amazing trainer. I have never once looked at the clock to see if I am done. I enjoy learning the right way to do exercises and strength training. I have seen a noticeable difference in what I am able to do.

I started going to Maura’s small group training class about 8 months ago and will always continue to sign up.

I would recommend Maura to anyone who is looking to start up with exercise or at an advanced level. Her kind, knowledgeable approach to teaching would put anyone at ease.

Maura is the best!!

“…After two surgeries and months in a rehab facility I ended up with minimal movement of my legs and no feeling in my feet. That’s when I met Maura.”

My name is Bob and 18 months ago I had an accident which injured my spinal cord. After two surgeries and months in a rehab facility I ended up with minimal movement of my legs and no feeling in my feet. That’s when I met Maura. She had not previously worked with anyone that had a SCI [spinal cord injury]. After starting off with low impact stretching and band exercises we gradually progressed to assisted walking for a short distance. A year later with Maura’s guidance I now can use a treadmill and with a little help climb stairs. We also use a Total Gym and I’m hopeful to start walking with crutches. All this has been done without regaining any more feeling in my feet. Without Maura’s direction and support I do not believe that my progress would have been possible. I highly recommend Maura to anyone that needs help in their recovery or fitness goals.

“…I have had some of my BEST workouts with her and I would highly recommend her!”

I’ve trained with Maura many times. You must be very comfortable with your trainer to get the most out of it, and that I found with her! She is full of knowledge. She has taught me a lot about the importance of exercise, proper form, and muscle groups. I have worked muscles I never knew I had!!! I have had some of my BEST workouts with her and I would highly recommend her!

“…She helped me build up my endurance and strength, and just as importantly, helped me stick with it and create challenging, yet reasonable, goals. She understands these are really ‘life’ goals and not just something you do until you lose 10 pounds.”

I have been working with Maura for over 2 years. It has been a fantastic experience! I started off weak and out of shape. Maura has been very motivational and a really positive force, but in a non-threatening way – which I appreciated. She helped me build up my endurance and strength, and just as importantly, helped me stick with it and create challenging, yet reasonable, goals. She understands these are really ‘life’ goals and not just something you do until you lose 10 pounds. It has taken some time but I am definitely healthier now than I was 2 years ago. Maura is also quite knowledgeable about diet, injuries, and other fitness related topics, which makes her a great resource for becoming a better, healthier person. If you’re looking to improve yourself and have a positive experience while doing it, Maura is the trainer for you!

“…Maura promotes a fun atmosphere while motivating you to push yourself to your absolute capacity. She always offers 3 different levels of all exercises when possible to fit the needs of everyone in the group without compromising everyone’s individual fitness goals.”

I have consistently incorporated exercise in my daily routine since I was 20 years old. I have done everything from aerobics, step class, nautilus as well as discovering running in my 30’s. I have considered myself a healthy eater and have tried to live a healthy lifestyle but as I was approaching my 50th birthday I was increasing my weight by 1-2 lbs a year despite never wavering from routine. I decided to sign up for Maura’s small group training in hopes to “mix up“ my routine and help increase my metabolism. This has been the best decision I have made!

Maura has a unique way of teaching class, incorporating all muscle groups using free weight, tension bands, your own body weight as with pilates and yoga inspired moves along with cardio activity within sets. Our group, which started with all different exercise levels from novice to experienced, has been together for 8 months.

Maura promotes a fun atmosphere while motivating you to push yourself to your absolute capacity. She always offers 3 different levels of all exercises when possible to fit the needs of everyone in the group without compromising everyone’s individual fitness goals.

Every circuit is different and every circuit workout ends with partner exercises and a game or challenge routine that always keeps the class fresh! I have yet to be bored and have I mentioned her awesome playlist!

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching each and every one of us increase our free weights and push ourselves to try a harder level. This has all been possible because Maura absolutely makes you feel like you can do it!

I have noticed such a change in my muscle tone and core strength. This class has given me the consistency of change that I needed to balance my exercise routine.

If you are looking to start an exercise program or revamp our current every day workout and get results, Maura Shipman is the trainer you are looking for.

“…I have a history of a bad back and weak joints in my legs and she taught me how to listen to my body and if I couldn’t do something we would modify it or build up to it. I always felt as if I was making progress. I left my workouts feeling accomplished and proud.”

Maura worked with me through the summer of 2014. I have struggled with my weight my whole life although I consider myself to be a relatively healthy person. Maura was wonderful with kicking me into gear and setting a focus to my workouts. Not only did she motivate me through the workouts we did in session but she also gave me valuable techniques, exercises and skills to use in all of my workouts. I have a history of a bad back and weak joints in my legs and she taught me how to listen to my body and if I couldn’t do something we would modify it or build up to it. I always felt as if I was making progress. I left my workouts feeling accomplished and proud. I learned to appreciate the soreness that I would inevitably feel the next day! She helped me evaluate my lifestyle choices and taught me how to live a healthy life. Maura is so wonderful because she pushes you but she motivates you and you really do feel better.

“…She is not only professional, but kind and caring as well.”

When I first signed up for one of Maura’s classes, I was in very bad physical shape. I was overweight, menopausal, and had much pain due to fibroid tumors and cysts. Over the past 2 years I have gained physical and mental strength, and confidence due to Maura’s training. Also, I’m happy to say I have no more pain related to menopause. She is not only professional, but kind and caring as well. Maura’s classes have helped me to handle any situation in life!

“…If you’re considering using Maura for any physical fitness needs…I think her biggest selling point is Maura herself. She’s kind, she cares, she encourages when needed, she keeps track of your progress…”

I have known Maura for 7 years. I met her through an exercise program at the gym. She has structured an exercise program for me as I’ve had MS for several years.

If you’re considering using Maura for any physical fitness needs…I think her biggest selling point is Maura herself. She’s kind, she cares, she encourages when needed, she keeps track of your progress, and she’s very smart 🙂

Finally, although it helps, she’s not in it for the money. When I need help with any of my physical fitness needs, I don’t hesitate to call Maura.
